Skin Needling or Needle Treatment for Face
Skin Needling is a kind of needle treatment for face that can help in stimulating the body’s own natural healing process and the regenerative response for the nourishment of the skin. The concept of skin needling is quite similar to acupuncture. During the procedure, tiny needles are used to create microscopic punctures or channels into the skin, causing a controlled wound. These wounds initiate the body’s healing process while stimulating the collagen production, leading to the formation of a new layer of the skin that is thicker and smoother than before. Even though the face is one of the primary areas for skin needling, it can also be used on any area of the body, anywhere the skin is structurally on the weaker side such as neck, décolleté, hands, arms, abdomen, buttocks, and legs. This is a painless out-patient process and is regarded by many to be as effective as a fractional laser resurfacing treatment.

How many Treatments Required?
During the consultation, the dermatologist will discuss your skin concerns and aesthetic aspirations while outlining the treatment procedure in detail including the number of sessions required as per your skin needs. Usually, most of the conditions require up to 6 sessions spaced at 4-6 week interval.
Skin needling or dermapen treatments are not suitable for patients with conditions such as acne vulgaris stage III-IV, warts, pustular rosacea, herpes simplex/cold sores, bacterial and fungal infections, open lesions, skin cancer, hemophilia, solar keratosis, and scleroderma.
Downtime and Recovery
The total procedure takes about 45-90 minutes. This includes an application of a numbing cream on the area to be treated prior to the procedure to minimize any discomfort or pain. You can experience mild redness for a few days after the treatment. Applying cooling masks can reduce the inflammation and redness while making your skin feel relaxed. You can wear minimal makeup the next day post-treatment to hide the redness. However, it is better to avoid makeup as using makeup brushes can irritate the open skin. Moreover, if there are any bacteria on the brushes, you may end up developing a skin infection.
Some patients may also experience some slight burning, skin tightness, and mild flaking. Try avoiding sun exposure, taking any anti-inflammatory medications, and using products containing active ingredients. Once the skin is healed, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to prevent further sun damage. Also, it is advisable to avoid activities that make you sweat. You will begin to see a noticeable difference in the texture of your skin along with fading of wrinkles, lines, and scars within a couple of weeks.
